When I was 13 all I wanted was to get my ears pierced! So, for my birthday my Mom and Grandma took me to the mall. There, at Claire’s, I picked out my bling and sat in the chair awaiting the dreadful “gun”. I was so nervous as this young, somewhat experienced woman marked my ear lobes for the new jewels that would soon become a part of my body. “BAM!” I walked out with red, swollen and gold-studded ears! I was soaring! My life was now complete. I could wear dangle, sparkling, round, even diamond earrings. I could compliment each outfit with a new glimmer around my face!
The weeks passed and it was time to change my studs to something new, something fantastic, something gorgeous! My best friend gave me my first dangling pair…they were silver turtles (an animal we both liked at the time). I couldn’t wait to wear them! I started to take out my studs when something horrid happened. I became weak in the knees, my stomach began to churn, my face turned white, everything started to turn black. I called out for my Mom. She came to my aid. I sat on the edge of our antique, clawed-foot tub as she attempted to trade my studs for turtles. The same emotion flooded my body. I almost passed out. There was no pain involved. There was no ooze or blood. There was only a wave of dizziness and nausea, and no explanation as to why. Needless to say, I let my new, beloved holes close and lived my life earring-less, UNTIL…
